The batting affects the warmth, weight, drape, texture, and overall appearance of your finished quilt. Taking a few minutes to understand you options can help ensure you're happy with the finished results.
Consider How the Qult Will Be Used:
The first question to ask is, "What is this quilt for?"
Bed quilts: Often benefit from soft, breathable batting that provides warmth without excessive weight.
Wall hangings: May use thinner batting to highlight quilting details.
Baby quilts: are commonly made with soft, washable batting that stands up well to frequent laundering
Table runners and placemats: Ofter use thinner batting to help them lie flat.
Choose the right Fiber
Each batting fiber offers unique advantages.
100% Cotton: provides a traditional look, excellent breathability, and a natural feel that many quilters prefer.
Cotton Blend: combines the softness of cotton with added durability and resilience.

100% Polyester: provides excellent loft, resists moisture, and is available in a variety of lofts for many quilting applications.
Think about loft:

Low loft batting creates a flatter, more traditional appearance and helps quilting stitches stand out.
Higher loft batting produces a fuller, more dimensional quilt and can enhance decorative quilting designs.
The best choice depends on the style and purpose of your project.
Consider Quilting Distance:
Every batting has a recommended maximum distance between quilting stitches. Following the manufacturer's guidelines helps maintain the batting's stability and appearance over time. Most batting offered by DixieDown and Quilter's Dream Batting can be quilted up to 10" apart. Most others are from 2" to 4".
